L&T Fast Tracks Production of Defence Ships
Inspector General TP Sadanandan, TM, Deputy Director General (Materiel & Maintenance) Indian Coast Guard laid the keels of 5th and 6th OPVs along with officials of L&T and Indian Coast Guard at L&T’s Defence Shipyard at Kattupalli near Chennai.
L&T is building a series of seven in-house designed new-generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard against a 2015 contract stipulating deliveries between 2018 to 2021. The first OPV, was delivered in April 2018, ahead of schedule. The second OPV launched in January 2018 is presently being readied for sea trials and is planned to be delivered ahead of schedule shortly, while system integration is in progress in 3rd and 4th OPVs, which are slated for launch later this year. Carrying the momentum further, on July 3, 2018, the keels of 5th and 6th OPVs were laid by Inspector General TP Sadanandan, TM, Deputy Director General (Material & Maintenance) Indian Coast Guard at L&T’s Defence Shipyard at Kattupalli near Chennai. Commenting on the occasion, Vice Admiral B Kannan (Retd.), MD & CEO, L&T Shipbuilding, noted that the keel laying of 5th and 6th OPVs comes close on the heels of delivery and commissioning of first OPV of the series, ICGS Vikram in April, 2018 which despite being a First of Class vessel was completed ahead of contracted schedule. “The ship’s build period, which is reckoned from keel laying to delivery, was accomplished in an impressive timeframe of less than 24 months and being substantially bettered on follow-on ships,” he said. L&T has had an impeccable record of delivery of Defence vessels since its inception. Just recently, two Interceptor Boats (IBs) designed and built by L&T were commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard, up to two years ahead of schedule. These ships are 39th and 40th vessels of the series of 54 interceptor boats being built by L&T. All these ships are presently deployed by the Indian Coast Guard across the Indian coastline to strengthen coastal security and augment patrolling to prevent infiltration, smuggling and illegal fishing. Earlier this year, L&T delivered to the Indian Navy, India’s first indigenously designed and built Floating Dock which can dock warships / submarines of up to 8000 tonnes of displacement. The Floating Dock which is presently stationed at Andaman & Nicobar Islands, was formally inducted into the Naval Service in May 2018 at a ceremony at Port Blair. It offers a cost effective and versatile solution for concurrent dry-docking ships / submarines, has attracted attention of many prospective users. L&T has also been entrusted by the Ministry of Defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to design and construct High Speed Patrol Vessels for the Vietnam Border Guard. The mandate is thus far the largest export order received by any Indian Shipyard.

Dr. Sudhir K Mishra, DS & Director General (BRAHMOS) and CEO & MD, BrahMos Aerospace inaugurated the second production line in the state of Gujarat to manufacture canisters designed for storage, transportation and launch of BRAHMOS missiles. The canister for a missile serves a dual function that provides a container for storage cum transport and launch. BRAHMOS Missile System, which was successfully test-fired recently, is integrated with L&T manufactured Composite Airframes and two different versions of Transport Launch Canister (TLC). L&T Defence has successfully completed the realisation of the Composite Airframes for the BRAHMOS Missile. The Advanced Composites Manufacturing Facility of L&T Defence at Ranoli, Vadodara, is geared up for serial production of BRAHMOS TLC. The unit has the accreditation of National Aerospace and Defence Contractors Accreditation Program (NADCAP) towards manufacturing of Aerospace Products. The Advanced Composites Laboratory at Ranoli, in its efforts towards quality compliance for the ongoing BRAHMOS Programme, has received the Accreditation Certification from National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). As the leading industry partner to BrahMos Aerospace, L&T Defence is augmenting the infrastructure at its Precision Manufacturing & Systems Complex Coimbatore by adding a Composites Facility, which will also cater to the serial production requirements of BRAHMOS Missile Programme. L&T Defence Delivers 1,000th Integrated Propulsion Airframe System Hardware of Akash Missile
(From L to R) Mr. J.D. Patil, Whole-time Director (Defence) and Member of L&T Board, Dr. S Christopher, Chairman, DRDO, and Mr. V. Udaya Bhaskar, Chairman & MD, BDL, at the handing over ceremony of the 1,000th Integrated Propulsion Airframe System hardware for Akash missile.
On May 19, 2018, L&T Defence successfully completed manufacturing of 1,000 Integrated Propulsion Airframe System hardware for the Akash Missile at L&T’s Precision Manufacturing Systems Complex (PMSC), Coimbatore. Mr. J.D. Patil, Whole-time Director (Defence) and Member of L&T Board, handed over 1,000th Integrated Propulsion Airframe System hardware to Mr. V. Udaya Bhaskar, Chairman & Managing Director, Bharat Dynamics Limited, in the presence of Dr. S Christopher, Chairman, DRDO at an event held at L&T Defence’s PMSC Coimbatore facility. Integrated Propulsion Airframe System hardware is a critical system of the Akash missile. It comprises Sustainer & Booster motors (Section IV & V) integrated with 112 other sub-assemblies and components. L&T Defence partnered Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL), DRDO’s Missile System laboratory for production technology & process development for Akash propulsion motors and produced prototype and limited series production of both the Sustainer & Booster motors creating an ecosystem of medium and small-scale enterprises. The propulsion system hardware is manufactured and integrated at L&T’s state-of-the-art facility at Coimbatore. L&T partnered DRDO in the development and productionisation of the Ground Mobile Launchers and Rohini Radar Systems that form part of the Akash Systems inducted by Indian Air Force as well as Indian Army. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Patil noted that L&T has been associated with the Akash missile program right from the development stage since 1987 and as a long-term development partner to DRDO, L&T has been following “ONE TEAM” approach with DRDL as well as BDL to speed up the industrialization phase of the Akash program. On receiving the 1,000th Akash Propulsion system hardware, Mr V. Udaya Bhaskar said that L&T has played a key role in enabling serial production of this critical missile system through innovation and use of advanced manufacturing technology. Lauding L&T further DRDO Chairman Dr. S Christopher, remarked that association of competent industrial partners like L&T in the early stages of the program’s development cycle is a key success factor in propelling Akash Weapon System induction by the users through accelerated industrialization phase. Akash is an all-weather medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system indigenously developed in India as part of the Integrated Guided-Missile Development Program (IGMDP). It provides multi-directional and multi-target area defence. The missile can be launched from static or mobile platforms, such as battle tanks, wheeled vehicles providing deployment flexibility. The SAM system can handle multiple targets and destroy maneuvering targets such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), fighter aircraft, cruise missiles and missiles launched from helicopters. The Akash SAM system defends vulnerable areas in all weather conditions against medium-range air threats from low, medium and high altitudes.
