AFFIRMING their formidable leadership prowess and the stellar role they play in scripting success stories for the companies they head, the CEOs of various L&T verticals have been garnering accolades aplenty as a matter of course.

The latest is the Business Today-PricewaterhouseCoopers ranking, which ranked L&T Group CEO & MD, Mr S N Subrahmanyan, the Best CEO in infrastructure & engineering segment in India.

Announcing the ranking, Business Today declared that Mr Subrahmanyan “is constructing a new L&T that remains true to its core, yet takes on new stripes that make it a more relevant organisation for the times”, and that his “track record made it relatively easy for the jury to declare him the winner”.

Mr Subrahmanyan’s leadership expertise has been demonstrated in many ways – the rise of the services business within the Group with margins beefier than the core business, the 2019 acquisition of Mindtree, the growth of the formerly tiny solar EPC business, and the growing infrastructure and hydrocarbon businesses.

Having grown with L&T, which he joined in 1984, Mr Subrahmanyan has a solid grasp of the wheels within its wheels. Thanks to his leadership, L&T continues its upward trajectory – despite the impact of the pandemic. During this trying time, not only has the Company delivered mega projects on time but has won significant orders – including one for the bullet train project, which is India’s largest infrastructure order so far.

Apart from Mr Subrahmanyan, the CEO of an L&T Group Company has also been recognised by Business Today. LTI CEO Mr Sanjay Jalona has been ranked the Best CEO in the IT & ITeS sector.

Business Today spoke of how Mr Jalona created a niche through acquisitions and by streamlining the strategy for LTI. Under him, LTI developed an acquisitions-led growth strategy, completing seven acquisitions. Focusing on sectors in which LTI has a competitive advantage, 53% of the business today is accounted for by data, cloud and digital.

Under his leadership, LTI continues to innovate in a fast-changing industry and today has 72 large global clients – up from 49 in 2016. The number of clients valued at over $1 million has more than doubled from 85 to 187. Building talent at scale, LTI has increased its total headcount by 31% year-on-year.

L&T has clinched as many as 22 awards from the British Safety Council for measures ensuring health, safety and well-being of its employees. The honours are part of the International Safety Awards 2022 announced this March.

L&T’s bag includes a Distinction Award and 21 Merit Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world that have shown true dedication over the last year to keeping their workers and workplaces healthy, safe and well.

While L&T as a whole won the Distinction Award, several L&T businesses and sub-verticals took away the Merit awards. These include L&T Construction and some of its arms such as the Water & Effluent Treatment, Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D), and the Transportation Infrastructure (TI).

More specifically, some of L&T’s projects in India and abroad won the Merits awards. These include L&T Mumbai Metro Line 3, TI’s Delhi Airport Ltd Phase-3A, L&T Transmission Line Tower Kanchipuram, L&T Heavy Civil Infra’s Bengaluru Metro Rail Project, L&T Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project, PT&D’s 132 kV RSS with Cabling for Dhaka Metro and Minerals & Metals SBG Civil & Structural Works at UAIL in Odisha.

The total number of successful entries this year was higher than in 2021, when 387 awards were given out. There is also a significant increase in the number of Distinctions awarded in 2022 as compared to 2021 – up from 13% to 21%.

Winning an International Safety Award requires organisations to show they are investing in their employees’ health, safety and wellbeing and that everyone from the top down make health and safety a core part of their work and inspire others to do the same,” says British Safety Council Chief Executive Mr Mike Robinson.

IT is indeed an honour for the Coimbatore manufacturing facility of L&T Valves to have won a silver medal at the National Awards for Manufacturing  Competitiveness  2021 organised by the International Research Institute for Manufacturing (IRIM).

Presented this January in Mumbai, the award is a meritocratic recognition based on the assessment of the facility.

Several factors contributed to L&T Valves’ Coimbatore facility garnering this honour. New product development led to niche offerings. Order processing lead time was reduced, and design optimisation was undertaken. Talent retention and development at mid-management level played an important role in the facility’s manufacturing competitiveness.

L&T Valves scored 79.2 on the Manufacturing Competitiveness Index, which measured attributes such as adaptability to customer and market requirements, performance stability in a changing world, planning and implementation of improvement initiatives, hands-on leadership deployment, ability to map and optimise the workflow, and data-based decision-making at all levels.

IRIM placed on record its appreciation for the many strengths of the Coimbatore facility. Over 85% orders are delivered on time, while the on- time delivery of special projects is 100%. IRIM commended the technical and operational capability of the team and the strategic location of the facility.

The new stores coming up at the site came in for special mention since it will help the facility build a full kit of items needed for assemblies, leading to better operational efficiencies for customer orders. The facility’s structured approach for layout optimisation improves material flow, leading to higher throughput and inventory control.

Moreover, value stream mapping has led to a drastic reduction in billing time – from 97 days to 10 days. The facility’s repair and maintenance operations have enabled it to maintain availability at over 75%.

This latest award spurs the L&T Valves team to continue in its quest for even higher standards of competitiveness.
