Enhancing Education
Enhancing Education
EDUCATION is a key thrust area for L&T’s CSR activities. The company constantly engages in initiatives to enhance the quality of education for children studying in government schools. As part of one such effort, L&T has adopted 14 government schools in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore.

New School Building

Under its flagship CSR endeavour – the School Adoption Project - L&T recently constructed a new building for the Government Higher Secondary School at Ashokapuram in Coimbatore. The Chief Educational Officer of Coimbatore, Ms P Usha, inaugurated the building on 8 December in the presence of Mr Paul Varghese (Head, Coimbatore Central Management, L&T). The Science Centre, set up by L&T Public Charitable Trust, was handed over to the school management.

Grateful to L&T, Ms Usha said: the new building would help more students and create the conditions for inculcating scientific curiosity among them. L&T’s CSR support for the school is bringing about revolutionary changes in its infrastructure to empower 1750 students from disadvantaged families.

Launched in 2014, L&T is implementing various development activities under the School Adoption Project across Coimbatore district. This project is being carried out by inking a memorandum-of-understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Education Department towards enhancing the quality of education in government schools.

L&T’s project activities include providing access to safe drinking water and sanitation; improving student health, safety and security; inducing behavioural change amongst children through communication; strengthening school infrastructure, including classrooms, smart classes, laboratories and quality of education, promoting sports and cultural activities.

Springboard to MBBS

A student of the school adopted under L&T CSR, Master N Gokulan, cleared the 2020 NEET exam and has secured admission in the Government Medical College at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. He is one of 21 students of government schools in Coimbatore district who cleared this prestigious entrance examination.

Hailing from a humble background, his performance affirms that government school students are on par with others. Overcoming the economic challenges faced by his family, Master Gokulan continuously fared well in school, and is poised to become his family’s first medical graduate.

He is full of praise for the school’s high-quality education. The school proudly revealed that other than attending online government coaching, the boy did not take any private coaching classes while preparing for NEET.
