With Love from L&T
With Love from L&T
IT was 46 years ago. On a scorching summer day, India took the world by great surprise by test detonating the country’s first ever nuclear weapon, the Smiling Buddha, popularly known as Pokhran-I.

This upset the global nuclear applecart. Reacting with shock and awe, major nations quickly issued sanctions against India. Canada, which had supplied a reactor for the Indian civil nuclear programme and was manufacturing a few more, unilaterally pulled out of the project, plunging it into uncertainty.

At this juncture, the Government of India turned towards a domestic company for completion of the crucial and critical task. That private sector company was none other than Larsen & Toubro, and it subsequently completed the balance work utilising indigenous technology and skillsets.

That was much, much before the term ‘Make In India’ was coined to push for indigenous capabilities. While this remains an watershed moment, L&T, interestingly, has been for decades implementing crucial and critical projects in diverse fields – not only in India but also on foreign lands.

Not many would know that L&T, India’s very own multinational conglomerate, is laying the Metro Railway networks in four countries; constructing several arterial superhighways in the Middle East; built the Abu Dhabi International Airport, as well as the world’s longest cross-country conveyor.

L&T is not only a trusted supplier and manufacturer of critical defence apparatus to the Indian Defence Services. It also exports defence products such as weapon, engineering and control systems and missile subsystems to as many as 11 foreign nations that are on India’s friend-list.

The conglomerate has manufactured the cryostat for the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor project in France; built a gas exploration platform in the Arabian Gulf; an oil and gas gathering centre in Kuwait and reactors for oil refineries in several countries, including the emerging superpower China. L&T is also building Sri Lanka’s tallest and most expensive hotel; a stadium and an eight-lane road for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

At home in India, L&T’s iconic contributions include the Lotus Temple in Delhi, the world’s tallest statue and the largest cricket stadium in Gujarat, India’s first Smart City in Rajasthan, the dazzling T2 of Mumbai airport and T3 of Delhi airport, the Metro Railway network in Hyderabad and Lucknow, and the ITC Royal Bengal in Kolkata that was thrown open last year.

L&T continues to live up to the nation’s expectation for self-reliant India or Aatmnanirbhar Bharat by delivering world-class projects, products and systems. The conglomerate has truly become the flagbearer of India’s engineering, construction and technological prowess in the rest of the world.

Here are glimpses into some recent iconic projects and products that L&T has delivered to the world and India. A glance through these would make every Indian heart swell with pride.

WORLD’S LARGEST CRYOSTAT – FRANCE

In 2012, L&T’s Heavy Engineering vertical won the prestigious contract to manufacture the cryostat for ITER, the world’s largest nuclear fusion reactor, coming up in France. At 29.4 meters in diameter, 29 meters in height and weighing 3,850 MT, the cryostat is the world’s largest stainless-steel, high-vacuum pressure chamber ever built. The vacuum-tight container is to surround the reactor vacuum vessel and the superconducting magnets, and is to essentially act as a very large refrigerator.

L&T’s scope included manufacturing the assemblies for the cryostat at its Hazira manufacturing complex in Gujarat, constructing a temporary workshop at the ITER site at Cadarache in France for assembling the various sectors, and integrating the cryostat in the Tokamak Reactor building. The sheer size of the cryostat meant that L&T had to plan for a three-stage build-up process. First manufacturing 54 segments in India and shipping them to France. Next, assembling the segments into four large manoeuvrable sections (base, lower cylinder, upper cylinder, top lid) at the on-site workshop. And lastly, integrating and welding the sections together in the Tokamak Pit.

L&T has supplied all the components ahead of the deadline, with the final component, the Top Lid, been flagged off this 30 June – despite  the challenges posed by COVID. During the nationwide lockdown, L&T engineers quickly adapted to the new normal and ensured uninterrupted supplies to ensure that assembly of the cryostat in France began as scheduled.

OFFSHORE GAS PROJECT - SAUDI ARABIA
