Volunteers from L&T and its partners restore a Saudi Arabian lagoon
In a major environmental initiative, Larsen & Toubro Arabia and Saudi Aramco undertook a clean-up drive on 2 December 2024 at Al Sahil, a man-made lagoon at Al-Khobar city in Saudi Arabia.
Al Sahil is a vital habitat for bird species such as the Slender-billed Gull and the Western Reef Heron. Marred by windblown plastics and waste, the lagoon had deteriorated, posing a significant threat to the birds’ breeding and feeding grounds.
The clean-up team comprised 104 volunteers, including three vendor group – AHEC, YadGreen, and Wefarm. Guided by Safety Lead Asif Husain, the volunteers spent over two hours diligently picking up and segregating around 1,200 kg of mixed waste. The waste was subsequently handed over to the Al-Khobar Municipality for disposal.
This collaborative effort rejuvenated Al Sahil lagoon, turning it into a cleaner, more vibrant habitat for the birds. A cleaner lagoon promises a safer sanctuary for the birds and supports a thriving ecosystem for the bottom-dwelling sea creatures, whose abundance and well-being are vital to the aquatic bionetwork.
The initiative underscored the importance of preserving coastal ecosystem and showcased the power of collective action in achieving tangible environmental goals.
L&T’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is evident, setting an inspiring example for future projects. Together with its partners, L&T is paving the way for a cleaner, greener and more sustainable future for the generations to come.
