Elevating Alumina
Elevating Alumina
IN September, Larsen & Toubro’s Metallurgical & Material Handling (MMH) vertical commissioned a 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) expansion project of Utkal Alumina International (UAIL), in Odisha’s Rayagada district.
UAIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco, the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group. The refinery is located at a remote place named Kucheipadar near Tikiri in Rayagada. With this expansion, the refinery’s alumina production capacity has got upgraded from 1.5 MTPA to 2 MTPA.
Odisha Chief Minister Mr Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the expansion project. In the past, MMH executed several alumina refinery projects in the domestic and the international markets. With its uniqueness in terms of complexity and environment friendliness, the new facility paves the way for executing similar projects in the future.
MMH executed the project in a time-bound manner ensuring that the most critical process units of the refinery are ready. It employed modular erection methods with sophisticated machinery for speedier project execution. The team overcame many difficulties, including limited material availability, inadequate local skilled workmen, hilly terrain and heavy rainfall with a prolonged monsoon. Moreover, the challenging work was completed during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, with 2,000 workmen working at the site with all due precautions and safety measures.

L&T’s Kancheepuram Works recently earned the ISO 3834-2-2005 certification for its Welding Quality Management System. In specific, this was for fusion welding of metallic materials in line with international standards.
The audit process leading to this certification was led by Mr R Kumar (Head – QA/QC, L&T Kancheepuram Works). Mr Anupam Kumar (EVP & Head – MMH), along with Mr Raju Rai (Head – Product BU), Mr Ranjit Ghosh (Head – EDRC) and Mr P Dinesh Kumar (Head – Engineering Workshop) commended all the process team member who made the certification possible.
On this occasion, Mr Prakash, qualified as a certified international welding engineer by the International Institute of Welding, was felicitated. This certificate will open new avenues, including international opportunities, for MMH.
