Elevating Alumina
Elevating Alumina
IN September, Larsen & Toubro’s Metallurgical & Material Handling (MMH) vertical commissioned a 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) expansion project of Utkal Alumina International (UAIL), in Odisha’s Rayagada district.

UAIL is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hindalco, the metals flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group. The refinery is located at a remote place named Kucheipadar near Tikiri in Rayagada. With this expansion, the refinery’s alumina production capacity has got upgraded from 1.5 MTPA to 2 MTPA.

Odisha Chief Minister Mr Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the expansion project. In the past, MMH executed several alumina refinery projects in the domestic and the international markets. With its uniqueness in terms of complexity and environment friendliness, the new facility paves the way for executing similar projects in the future.

MMH executed the project in a time-bound manner ensuring that the most critical process units of the refinery are ready. It employed modular erection methods with sophisticated machinery for speedier project execution. The team overcame many difficulties, including limited material availability, inadequate local skilled workmen, hilly terrain and heavy rainfall with a prolonged monsoon. Moreover, the challenging work was completed during the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, with 2,000 workmen working at the site with all due precautions and safety measures.
