L&T’s Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) vertical has commissioned a 400/220/33 kV gas insulated substation (GIS) at Lahal in Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Mr Jai Ram Thakur inaugurated it on 17 August.

Those present at the inaugural ceremony included Shimla MP Mr Suresh Kumar Kashyap, Dy Speaker of Himachal Assembly Mr Hans Raj, Bharmour MLA Mr Jia Lal Kapoor, Chamba Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate Mr D C Rana, Himachal Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (HPPTCL) MD Mr Ranvir Singh Jalta, HPPTCL Director Projects Mr Arun Kumar Goyal and HPPTCL Chief Engineer/GM Projects Mr Madan Lal Sharma.

With this, PT&D has enabled HPPTCL draw 593 MW power from hydro projects and provide an alternative energy source to the Bharmour region in Chamba district. Despite the challenges of operating in a high-altitude rugged terrain, amid inclement weather, heavy snowfall and poor connectivity, the GIS project was successfully completed and handed over.

At present, Bharmour region is dependent on 33 kV long-line which supplies electricity from Bathri and Karian substations. The power load on these lines is high and, in the event of any fault, the entire area goes into a power shutdown. With the construction of the GIS substation, a reliable alternative electricity source is now available, giving the residents a reprieve from frequent power cuts.

In addition, the substation will help improve the area’s voltage profile. Going further, power stabilisation in this region is bound to be enhanced with connection to the national grid at 400 kV level with the commission of the 400 kV Lahal-Rajera transmission line which is under execution.

The Chief Minister appreciated the project team’s efforts by presenting a trophy for ‘Excellent Construction Work’. It was received by project manager Mr Siva Kumar K and planning manager Mr Ravinder Singh. Mr Jalta acknowledged the good work by presenting the team a ‘Performance Certificate of Excellence’, highlighting that “this project holds great importance for Himachal Pradesh and is also a powerful contribution to the nation at large.”
