This issue of News & Views is going out at a time when the world is in the grip of coronavirus, and the nationwide lockdown in India is inching towards two months. This is a crisis whose enormity few people could foresee even as late as in January. As such, the initial response was incohesive. But as the crisis deepened, both individuals and organisations started getting their acts together. L&T was quick to act by contributing to the Centre’s COVID fund, providing shelter and food to contract workers, feeding the underprivileged, donating masks and sanitisers to police and health workers, ordering COVID testing kits for several states, helping 20-odd cities enforce the lockdown with smart technology and offering to build COVID Care Hospitals in 3-4 months. Hence, the cover story narrates all the initiatives that L&T has undertaken so far and their impact on people. Since work-from-home is likely to be a way of life for a while, there are articles on ways to adapt to the new mode. On the business side, despite the lockdown, there’s been virtually a shower of new orders for L&T in April. This is clearly an indication of our solid business outlook and this should be a reason to smile. As we say, building things big is L&T’s legacy and emerging stronger is our habit.
