Notwithstanding the Covid crisis, L&T businesses are witnessing a steady flow of new orders. Here’s a rundown of the contracts the company won in April alone.
HYDROCARBON ENGINEERING
On April 8, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) awarded L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Ltd a contract worth Rs 2,500-3,000-crore. This is for engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning (EPCC) of a new 9-MMTPA Atmospheric & Vacuum Distillation Unit (AVU) and allied facilities for the capacity-expansion project of IOCL’s refinery at Barauni in Bihar. The current capacity of this refinery is 6 MMTPA. LTHE is already implementing a similar EPCC project, that is, the execution of a 9 MMTPA Crude and Vacuum Distillation for HPCL’s Visakh Refinery Modernisation Project.
POWER TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION
On April 9, Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business of L&T Construction won major orders in India and abroad valued at Rs 5,000-7,000-crore.
This include upgrading substations and related power facilities in Mina Al Ahmadi Oil Refinery of Kuwait National Petroleum Company in Kuwait and, an order for a 400-kV grid station in Oman crucial to the Sultanate’s major transmission initiative to interconnect the grids in the south and north with the PDO Area. From Egypt, came an order to design, supply, construct and commission a 220 kV Gas Insulated Substation (GIS).
Next, the renewable arm of the business won large EPC orders both on the domestic and international fronts for Solar Photovoltaic plants of over 500 MW. These grids connected to power plants also entail related power evacuation and interconnection systems.
Then, there’s an order to strengthen the urban HT distribution network in Chennai with the addition of Ring Main Units and Feeder Remote Terminal Units on a turnkey basis. Also, fully automated, unmanned 33 kV GISs are to be established at select locations. In Uttar Pradesh, the contract is for supply and installation of Medium Voltage capacitor banks with related accessories for various electricity distribution companies.
WATER & EFFLUENT TREATMENT
On April 13, Water & Effluent Treatment (WET) arm of L&T Construction secured as many as three Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) water management orders from the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation. The orders are valued at Rs 2,500 -5,000-crore.
These include design, build, operate, maintain and transfer of water supply systems in Hubli–Dharwada, Kalaburagi and Belagavi cities in Karnataka for cost effective and sustainable upscaling to a 24x7 pressurised water supply. The projects, largely funded by the World Bank, are to supply water to about 29 lakh people.
WET secured another EPC order from the Tiruchirappalli City Corporation for an underground sewerage scheme to added areas of Tiruchirappalli City Corporation Phase III. The scope includes laying of sewer pipelines, construction of RCC manholes, pumping and lifting stations and providing sewer connections to households.
HEAVY CIVIL
On April 15, L&T Construction’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure business bagged two contracts for building Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Infrastructure from NCR Transport Corporation of Uttar Pradesh.
Scope of the two Rs 1,000-2,500-crore contracts covers executing a new, dedicated, highspeed, high-capacity rail system on Delhi – Gaziabad – Meerut corridor. The packages include ~ Duhai to Modi Nagar and Modi Nagar to Shatabdi Nagar ~ running a total distance of approximately 32-km viaduct and seven elevated stations.
RRTS is distinct from metro transit systems as it caters to passengers traveling relatively longer distances at higher speed and with fewer stops. The design speed for the project is 180 kmph, with an average operational speed of 100 kmph.
HEAVY ENGINEERING
On April 16, L&T’s Heavy Engineering arm won contracts worth Rs 1,000-2,500-crore. These include orders for Key Gasification Equipment from China’s Wuhan Engineering Ltd for Talcher Fertilizer, a first-of-its-kind coal gasification project in India located in Odisha. It is to produce 1.27 MMTPA urea through the gasification of the mixed feedstock of Indian coal with high ash content and pet coke.
The other noteworthy orders include Reactors and Heat Exchangers for Process Plant and Nuclear Power sectors. International orders have been secured mainly from the US, Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and South-East Asia.
BUILDINGS & FACTORIES
On April 17, L&T Construction’s Buildings & Factories (B&F) arm secured multiple orders valued at Rs 1,000-2,500-crore from major clients in India. The first one is a design and build order from a leading cement manufacturer for executing and commissioning a 9,500 TPD cement plant at Ametha in Katni district of Madhya Pradesh.
The second order came from a reputed developer in Bengaluru for a residential complex having a total built up area of five million Sq ft. The scope includes design and construction of the civil structure, waterproofing, masonry and plastering for 18 towers with two basements and G+ 28/29 floors.
The next order is from a key government organisation for constructing Smart Data Centres in Hyderabad and Chennai having a total built up area of 2.68 lakh Sq ft. The scope includes engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, operation and maintenance.
POWER TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION
On April 20, PT&D business again bagged multiple orders in India and abroad. The orders are valued at Rs 1,000-2,500-crore. These include modernisation of the power distribution network in a subdivision of Bengaluru Metropolitan Area Zone. With the scope involving conversion of high voltage overhead lines into underground cables and creation of additional feeders for load bifurcation, the project will enhance the reliability of the power system.
PT&D also bagged orders to establish 220kV, 132kV substations and 132kV cable networks in India, the Middle East and Africa. It secured another order, in a consortium, for rehabilitation of substations and transmission lines associated with hydropower plants in Myanmar.
MULTIPLE BUSINESSES
On April 21, multiple businesses of L&T secured orders from various prestigious clients with a cumulative value of Rs 1,000-2,500-crore. Metallurgy and Material Handling business secured an order from BHEL to manufacture and supply heavy material handling equipment with high-end automation for 5x800 MW Thermal Power Plant at Yadadri in Telangana.
Another EPC order came from Birla Copper, a unit of Hindalco Ltd, to revamp its Copper Smelter complex at Dahej in Gujarat. The scope includes assessment, re-engineering, and refurbishment of operating plant facilities.
Smart World & Communication business bagged a smart city project in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh with five year comprehensive operation and maintenance. The scope covers deployment of an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC), intelligent traffic management system, city surveillance, wi-fi, technology-enabled solid waste management, GIS, citizen portal and e-office applications.
L&T GeoStructure won an order from the State Project Management Unit of West Bengal for flood protection works and embankment strengthening of Damodar river in East Burdwan and Hooghly districts. This is to be done using sheet piles and Bullah piles.
BUILDINGS & FACTORIES
On April 22, B&F arm again secured orders valued at Rs 1,000-2,500-crore from several clients in India. The first one is for design and construction of an integrated resort complex project in the tourist heaven Goa. B&F secured another order for constructing a Technology Park in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala with the total built up area being 2.3 million sq ft.
RAILWAYS STRATEGIC BUSINESS
On April 24, the Railways Strategic Business unit of L&T Construction won an order from the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. This is in consortium with Kyosan Electric Manufacturing Co Ltd of Japan and is worth about Rs 1,000-2,500-crore.
The design and build orders involve 2x25 KV overhead electrification, signalling & telecommunication and associated works on the Dadri-Khurja and Sahnewal-Khurja sections of the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor. The job is spread across 442 route km and 638 track km.
