First Phase of Mauritius Metro Express Inaugurated
On October 3, 2019, the first phase of the Mauritius Metro Express project was jointly inaugurated by Mauritian Prime Minister Mr. Pravind Jugnauth and Indian Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. The much-talked about light rail transit system, in phase-I, will connect the national capital Port Louis to Rose-Hill town.
 
The inauguration ceremony was a grand affair organized at the depot. The high-profile event was attended by L&T CEO & MD Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan along with Railway SBG Chief Executive Mr. Rajeev Jyoti, and Project Director Mr. G Vinod.
 
On the occasion, the metro made a successful inaugural trip from the depot to Rose-Hill Station with Prime Minister Jugnauth, selected dignitaries and local media on board. The occasion was marked by loud cheers from the huge crowd of locals and L&T staffers who had gathered to witness the event.
 
PM Modi who attended the inauguration ceremony virtually via Web, congratulated the people of Mauritius on the successful launch of the landmark project and reiterated India’s support to the island nation.
 
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Subrahmanyan said, “It has been one of the fastest executed Transit Systems by L&T. This project gives us an opportunity to deliver from ‘Track to Train’ and is a first-of-its-kind integrated project for an Indian company to do outside India.”
 
L&T received accolades for their project delivery from the PM of Mauritius, the Minister of Infrastructure and Land Transport, the High Commissioner of India and other major stakeholders of the project.
