EHS Conclave Pushes for Developing Zero Accident Vision 2021
EHS Conclave Pushes for Developing Zero Accident Vision 2021

For L&T, Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) is non-negotiable. Long before the smartly acronymised discipline gained currency in the corporate circles and enterprises began paying attention to environmental concerns, carbon footprint, and workplace safety for employees, L&T already had in place strong EHS measures and practices ensuring a sustainable business and safe working environment for employees.

L&T’s Corporate EHS function, responsible for implementing and institutionalising the practice throughout the Group, regularly conducts programmes to ensure that different businesses and practitioners across the Group continue to stay the course and not waver in their commitment to EHS. As part of the effort it recently organised a two-day EHS Conclave at LDA (Lonavala) on 21st & 22nd December 2017. Themed around ‘Developing Zero Accident Vision 2021’ the conclave had EHS Heads of all the ICs participate and ideate on a number of issues focused on refining EHS performance while incorporating the expectations of the senior management and learning from global best practices.

The conclave witnessed a number of expert talks and intense discussions facilitated by professionals of international repute. There were brainstorming sessions facilitated by Mr. Shikhar Jain, Principal Counsellor – CII and presentations by the likes of Mr. Suresh Tanwar, Chief - Group Safety & Health, Tata Sons and Mr. Mandar Phadke – Global Safety Director at Backer & Hughes – General Electric (GE), USA & ex-HSE Director of British Petroleum (BP). While Mr. Tanwar in his talk detailed ‘Safety Beliefs’ that guide EHS efforts at one of India’s most recognised business conglomerates, Mr. Phadke during his session shared his mantra for ‘Zero Incident’ at Backer & Hughes. Mr. Phadke’s session encouraged the participants to relook and re-think existing systems and develop a belief that ZERO (Incident) is POSSIBLE.

Mr. Ankur Chaudhary from Corporate HR deliberated on capability building through NEBOSH & IOSH trainings.  There were two external EHS experts who made a case for Bowtie methodology of incident analysis & investigation and a Web-based Software for incident reporting, analysis, lesson learnt, and sharing & communication escalation features for closeout of findings.

Mr. K. Kannan, EVP & Head – Commercial Buildings & Airports SBG, B&F IC, and Mr. K.K. Dey, Segment Head Residential Building, B&F IC, addressed the participants over VC.

On Day 2 of the Conclave Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan, CEO & Managing Director, L&T, addressed the gathering via video conferencing. In his talk he recommended setting up of ‘Cross-IC Task Forces’ to address critical safety issues with timeline and output driven programs in addition to individual IC specific EHS Roadmap. Based on his direction six such teams have already been formed to address key areas.

The Conclave also saw EHS Head of each IC present a specific action plan for Zero Accident. The conclave offered participants plenty of food for thought for strengthening EHS programmes throughout L&T and just the right push needed to achieve its Zero Accident Vision 2021.
