The Green Leap
The Green Leap
India’s energy needs are growing rapidly. To enable India to fulfil her potential and take her rightful place on the world stage, a ramping up of power is essential. Minimising pollution while maximising energy is one of humankind’s most pressing needs. And that’s where green hydrogen comes in.

Of the many ways in which water can be split into hydrogen and oxygen, electrolysis using renewable energy is the most eco-friendly – producing no carbon dioxide as in the case of other methods. A downside is its cost, but as more and more facilities are set up, costs will settle down to manageable levels.

Larsen & Toubro has always been at the forefront of technology, and it has been no different in the case of alternative energy for its facilities. Stepping onto the green hydrogen bandwagon, L&T has commissioned a green hydrogen plant at its A M Naik Heavy Engineering Complex (AMNHEC) at Hazira in Gujarat. It will produce 45 kg of green hydrogen daily, which will be used for captive consumption in AMNHEC.

The plant was inaugurated on 20 August by the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd Chairman Mr Shrikant Madhav Vaidya in the presence of L&T CEO & MD Mr SN Subrahmanyan and other leaders.

Specifications

The plant is designed for an electrolyser capacity of 800 kW comprising both Alkaline (380 kW) and PEM (420 kW) technologies. It will be powered by a rooftop solar plant of 990 kW peak DC capacity and a 500 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

Spread across 3000 sq metres, the plant will generate high purity (99.99%) green hydrogen and oxygen. A blend of 15% hydrogen with natural gas will be used as a fuel, and oxygen will supplement the usage in cutting and welding at AMNHEC.

Safety

To ensure safe operation and production, the plant design incorporates active and passive safety systems and will be operated through state-of-the-art control systems with remote monitoring functionality. An integrated data analytics platform, designed by L&T, will provide insights into the performance of the electrolysers and the overall plant.

ESG Excellence

Commenting on this, Mr Subramanian Sarma (L&T’s Whole-time Director & Sr EVP - Energy) says: “This initiative is in line with our climate leadership targets that will help reduce the greenhouse gas footprint for us as well as our clients by approximately 300 tonnes/ annum. We believe that green hydrogen is a promising alternative fuel, and this plant is a testimony that we are committed to creating a greener tomorrow.”

The initiative aligns with L&T’s ESG commitments – which include achieving water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040. L&T’s climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy programmes are aligned with Government of India’s National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC).
