PT&D Commissions 500 kV Power Transmission Line in Malaysia
PT&D Commissions 500 kV Power Transmission Line in Malaysia
The Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business of L&T Construction has added yet another benchmark to its list of international accomplishments with the commissioning of a 500 kV transmission line between Yong Peng East Substation to Point A at Johor in Malaysia. This is the first 500 kV transmission line successfully completed and commissioned by L&T on EPC basis outside India.

Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the electrical utility, proposed the construction of a 200 km span 500 kV transmission line from Yong Peng to Lenggeng to cater to the emerging power requirements. This transmission line along with the other planned 500 kV substations will reinforce supply into the central area and would also become the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia’s transmission system.

The EPC contract for one of the three packages of the transmission line for a length of 65 kms was awarded to L&T through international competitive bidding. The scope of work involved laying of foundations for 168 nos. of lattice towers and its erection and stringing of 1659kms of Quad conductor. The line which traverses mostly through palm estates had two power line crossings, five road crossings, one railway crossing and one gas pipeline crossing. The project also involved construction of a 82.6 m tall special tower for powerline and road crossing in one span. The design and successful testing of this tower was done by PT&D IC’s EDRC team at the tower testing facilities in Kanchipuram.

The initiative to use sag bridge for conductor stringing activity was a first by any EPC contractor in Malaysia and won accolades from TNB.

PT&D’s Substation BU Engineers Passageway for 8 Hulking Transformers
PT&D’s Substation BU Engineers Passageway for 8 Hulking Transformers
PT&D’s Substation BU at GIS Lahal Project engineered a safe passage way for the movement of 8 overweight consignment of 63.5MVA-3Ph, 220KV/33KV transformers having self-weight of 82MT & Gross vehicle weight of 147MT (including launching arrangement) over a 32 year old double cantilever Kharamukh Bridge (IRC-6 class 40R) with a load bearing capacity of 42 MT and a span of 85mtr within 16 days by using an innovative method developed by L&T’s in-house Special Projects & Construction Methods department.

This critical movement is executed for the first time in this region at an MSL of 1450m. The process involved splitting the load by using specially designed 30m span girder with special steel to limit the overall system weight to suit the bridge.

To align with the bridge capacity while crossing the tip of the cantilever bridge, two level movement of the transformer was arranged by using a wheeled trolley for the upper level movement and multi axle trailers were deployed for the lower level movement. The Puller of the trailer was removed to reduce the loading weight on the bridge and the trailer was pulled using electric winch anchored to the hill on the exit side of the bridge. The top-level wheeled trolleys were pulled using mono strand jacks which were remote controlled.

This transfer of overweight transformers was achieved despite many challenges like heavy rain, single connecting roads (can work over night only with total road shutdown), sharp cuts, etc. the bridge was under shutdown for vehicular movement with prior permission from the administration.

DMRC Line 9 from Dwarka to Najafgarh Section Flagged Off
DMRC Line 9 from Dwarka to Najafgarh Section Flagged Off
On October 4, 2019, Transportation Infrastructure’s Railway SBG’s CE-07 Lot-2 and CT-11 Project section from Dwarka to Najafgarh Section (Grey Line, Line 9) was flagged off by Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, and Hon’ble Shri Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister of Delhi. The 4.2 km stretch consists of two elevated stations (Dwarka and Nangli), one underground station (Najafgarh), two switching stations and one auxiliary substation. This line will connect the Najafgarh area to the rest of the city by metro and will have three stations on the route including Dwarka, Nangli and Najafgarh.

The Najafgarh station will be the longest stand-alone underground station in the Delhi Metro network. The line will also facilitate the interchange with the existing Dwarka station (Blue Line - L3) to rural areas of Najafgarh. The project was completed against stringent timelines, ensuring utmost quality and safety. DMRC officials commended L&T for successful completion of 25kV OHE system, 33kV Auxiliary Power Supply System and Track works for this metro line.
