Operationalising India’s First Ultra-Supercritical Unit for NTPC
L&T Power has successfully operationalised two thermal power units of 660 MW each at NTPC’s Khargone Super Thermal Power Project in Madhya Pradesh and Tanda Thermal Power Station in Uttar Pradesh thereby allowing NTPC to add 1320 MW to the national grid.

The 660 MW Khargone unit is the country’s first ultra-supercritical unit set up on complete engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. Ultra-supercritical units feature steam parameters of 600 degree Celsius and 270 kg/cm2 pressure resulting in higher efficiencies, enabling plants to consume less coal resulting in lesser emissions in comparison to sub-critical and supercritical power plants.

The 660 MW Tanda unit is equipped with supercritical boiler manufactured by L&T-MHPS Boilers Pvt Ltd, a joint venture company of L&T and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), Japan. The Khargone and Tanda projects are each of 2x660 MW capacity.

L&T CEO & MD Mr. S.N. Subrahmanyan congratulated L&T Power for the successful operationalisation of the two units and said that the projects demonstrate L&T’s robust capabilities in engineering, manufacturing, project management and construction in executing complex mega power projects.

Mr. Shailendra Roy, CEO & Managing Director, L&T Power & Whole-time Director, L&T noted that lately NTPC and other state utilities have been opting for the EPC route for execution of big power projects since projects set up earlier on multiple split packages tended to run into delays given complexities in coordination, interface issues, absence of single point responsibility, etc. “L&T will continue to strive for meeting customer expectations by setting new benchmarks in delivering power projects on schedule.”

With the commissioning of the first unit of Khargone project, L&T Power has significantly enhanced its credentials. Earlier, L&T executed supercritical power projects for Nabha Power Ltd (Punjab), Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd and Madhya Pradesh Power Generation Company Ltd on complete EPC basis.

Recently, L&T began the execution of 2x660 MW ultra-supercritical power project for SJVN Thermal Private Ltd at Buxar (Bihar) on complete EPC basis.
