AS a responsible corporate citizen, L&T Technology Services (LTTS) is aware of its special role in driving social well-being. Over the years, LTTS has undertaken several measures as part of its CSR commitment to help uplift society and has continued to support welfare measures even at the height of the pandemic.

A CARING HAND

COVID-19 has taken a toll on not just the elderly and the ill but also on children. To alleviate the sufferings of children orphaned in the pandemic, LTTS has joined forces with MILT Charitable Trust to provide permanent shelter to children orphaned by the pandemic. Christened Sneha-Hastha, the project will provide long-term support to children in need of a home. It will also focus on children’s extra-curricular activities such as exercise and dance, which will lead to their overall development so that their quality of life improves.

L&T Prayas Trust president Ms Meena Subrahmanyan launched the project in Bengaluru on 13 September. The event was attended by Mr M Lakshmanan (Chief Human Resources Officer – LTTS), Mr K N Prabhakaran (CSR Head – LTTS) and the trustees of MILT. Ms Subrahmanyan distributed gifts to some children supported by MILT. During the function, the children performed a few dance numbers.

SISTERLY SUCCOUR

To provide relief and shelter to children of COVID-19 infected parents in Bengaluru, LTTS, in collaboration with the SOS Children's Villages, has created temporary relief shelters for girl children missing the affection and protection of parental care. The shelters are located at the SOS Villages’ lush, green campus in Bengaluru where children are cared for and nurtured by matrons affectionately known as ‘mothers’ and ‘aunts’.

Ms Subrahmanyan inaugurated the initiative on 13 September. Mr Lakshmanan and Mr Prabhakaran were present. Ms Subrahmanyan also put smiles on the children’s faces by gifting them sports kits and clothes, while donating surgical masks and sanitisers to the SOS Village. The management of the SOS Village took her on a tour of the campus, and she was all praise for the quality care provided to children both at the short-term facilities and the permanent shelters.

Urban Wellbeing
Urban Wellbeing
L&T-MHI Power Boilers Pvt Ltd (LMB), a joint venture of L&T and Mitsubishi Power Ltd, has been executing CSR projects in the vicinity of its head office at Faridabad in the National Capital Region, workshop at Hazira in Gujarat and several project sites across India.

In the latest instance, LMB has constructed a state-of-the-art OPD block at the Urban Health Centre (UHC) at Faridabad’s Sector 21D.  It consists of six doctor's rooms, a pharmacy and a pantry. The OPD block’s modern amenities will cater to an urban underprivileged population of around one lakh. LMB spent around Rs 97.8 lakh on this project.

Mr Saurabh Indwar (CE & Whole-Time Director – LMB) and Mr Shigeharu Kokuryo (COO & Whole-Time Director – LMB) ceremoniously handed over the OPD block to the hospital administration on 10 September. Dr Shashi Gandhi (Sr Medical Officer – UHC) expressed gratitude to LMB for the contribution towards this noble cause.

Augmenting the capabilities of such health centres is essential to attain the goal of good health for all. Moreover, the initiative will go a long way in fostering LMB’s relationships with the local communities residing in and around its establishment.

Terminating Tobacco
Terminating Tobacco
ACCORDING to the National Cancer Registry, tobacco consumption is one of the major causes of mouth cancer in Gujarat. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that even smokeless tobacco contains many cancer-causing toxins and it increases the risk of cancer of the head, neck, throat, oesophagus and oral cavity as well as various dental diseases.

Considering this major health and lifestyle concern, L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering (LTHE) conceived Gutka Mukt Gam – a tobacco de-addiction initiative – targeting the rural community in Vadodara. In collaboration with Gujarat Medical & Education Research Society’s (GMERS) Gotri Hospital, the intervention initiative was introduced last year in Piparkui Village on a pilot basis. Following its success, LTHE has now expanded the initiative to two more villages in Vadodara’s Waghodia block. This is being done in association with two NGOs named AWAG and SCORE.

On 16 September, the inaugural session was held at Hanumanpura village in the presence of Mr Sudheer P V Nambiar (Group QHSE Head – LTHE), Dr Sandip Shah (HOD, Psychiatry Dept – GMERS Gotri Hospital), Vadodara Police’s ‘She’ team (a unit of women officers to attend to distress calls and complaints from women) and the Sarpanch of Hanumanpura. The session included an awareness talk and a de-addiction pledge administered by the Gotri Hospital team. It ended with inspiring words from the ‘She’ team members.

Gutka Mukt Gam generates awareness and educates women, children and adolescents about tobacco dependence and its harmful effects. It provides appropriate medical support and counseling to tobacco addicts, enabling them quit tobacco in all its forms. At the next level, contact is established through regular door-to-door sessions, telephonic sessions and follow-up visits. The initiative will, hopefully, go a long way in curbing the prevalence of cancer and all the pain and expense it entails.
