Kanithi Balancing Reservoir-2 Project Inaugurated
Kanithi Balancing Reservoir-2 Project Inaugurated
L&T Construction’s Water & Effluent Treatment Business has successfully completed the Kanithi Balancing Reservoir-2 project and handed over the infrastructure to Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) -  Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, for water storage. On April 7, 2019, the prestigious project was inaugurated by Mr. P.K. Rath, Chairman and Managing Director, RINL VSP, along with Mr. Hari Narayanan I.A.S, Commissioner, GVMC, Visakhapatnam. Mr. K. Saravanan, Head-Industrial Water Segment and Mr. P. Muthupandian, Project Manager, and the entire Project Team along with various dignitaries of GVMC, RINL VSP and WAPCOS Ltd graced the occasion.

The existing KBR-1 reservoir inside the Steel Plant could not retain adequate water because of leakages and heavy evaporation losses due to structural disintegration over its vast surface area. In fact, KBR-1 could only retain water for a maximum of 20 days, which is less than half of the intended water retention capacity. This severely affected the steel production capacity of RINL. The KBR-2 project executed by L&T draws its significance due to its compactness and high capacity. Constructed over 225 acres of land (1/3rd of KBR-1), KBR-2 provides a storage capacity of 12.3 Million Cumecs of water. It is 1070 m long, 650 m wide and 25.3 m deep. The project will aid the steel plant in maintaining its current production capacity of 6.3 Million Tons per annum (2015-16) and will also augment the future production plan of 11.7 Million Tons per annum, thereby meeting RINL’s vision for 2021. Furthermore, L&T completed and handed over the reservoir to RINL VSP just before the summer to support their production, demonstrating its client centricity and commitment to just in time delivery.

KBR-2 reservoir was constructed by executing 73 lakh Cum of earthwork, which included 37 lakh cum of hard rock excavation. Despite the huge volume of hard rocks encountered during excavation, the core works were completed in a record time of 24 months. In addition to the reservoir, the project comprised construction of the 2.2 km canal and a 40m high pump house.

UAE’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant Delivered Ahead of Schedule
UAE’s Largest Sewage Treatment Plant Delivered Ahead of Schedule
A 375,000 cum/day Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Jebel Ali (Phase 2), the biggest in the United Arab Emirates, built by L&T for the Dubai Municipality was inaugurated recently. Built along with JV partners, BESIX, the Jebel Ali STP is the biggest such facility built by L&T Construction and delivered ahead of schedule while still maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety.

The STP built on a Build, Test, Commission, Operate & Maintain mode features Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Treatment Process units such as Screening, Grit Separation & Removal, Primary Sedimentation (Flight & Scrapper mechanism), Biological Reactors, Final Settlement (Bridge & Scrapper Mechanism), Tertiary Filtration (gravity filters), UV Disinfection and Chlorination. The Sludge Treatment Process includes Sludge Thickening (Rotary Drums & Belt Thickeners), Anaerobic Digestion, Dewatering (Centrifuge), Sludge Drying (Thermal paddle dryers) facilities and Robotic Bagging System. Other Scope of works included odour control facilities, Phase 1 STP interconnection, upgrading works in Phase 1, effluent pump stations, effluent reservoirs and biological reactors.

The Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant Phase-2 Expansion is Dubai Municipality’s strategic project of 375,000 cubic meters per day to meet current and future demand generated from the surrounding area.

220 kV Receiving Substation for Lucknow Metro Commissioned
220 kV Receiving Substation for Lucknow Metro Commissioned
L&T Construction has converted the vision of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation into reality by constructing the country’s fastest metro rail system, a feat that was accomplished successively across Phase I and II. Adding one more achievement to this project, the Power Transmission & Distribution Business of L&T Construction recently commissioned a 220/33/25 kV Receiving cum Auxiliary Main cum Traction Substation in just 11 months. Considering the project track record of LMRC, PT&D had the onus of meeting the delivery schedule of the customer in line with the revenue operation date. The scope of the task involved Design, Supply, Installation, Testing and Commissioning of the substation. Mr. Kumar Keshav, MD, LMRC, appreciated the efforts of the PT&D team in building the state-of-the-art substation which will act as a feeder for Lucknow Metro.

The state-of-the-art facility has a 220 kV Gas Insulated Substation, two 30 MVA Auxiliary Transformer, two 30 MVA Traction Transformer, 25kV GIS, 33kV AIS and an Auxiliary System. The Substation is controlled through the Substation Automation System. The architecture of the building was designed in sync with the other heritage buildings of Lucknow.
