L&T Delivers Medigadda Barrage Project
L&T Delivers Medigadda Barrage Project
June 21, 2019, is a date that will remain etched forever in the collective memory of the people of Telangana. For it is on this date that their prayers for water were finally answered. It was the date that L&T Construction completed and delivered to the state, the iconic Medigadda Barrage project bringing renewed hope to millions across Telangana’s parched landscape.

The day saw the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Telangana Shri K. Chandrashekar Rao inaugurate the megastructure, part of Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation project, in the august presence of Hon’ble Governor of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh Shri E.S.L. Narasimhan, and Chief Guests Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra Shri Devendra G Fadnavis and Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Shri Jaganmohan Reddy.

Completed in just 24 months from start to finish, the Medigadda Barrage will be a major part of the vital irrigation infrastructure to lift an estimated 180 TMC of water per year from the river Godavari to the Sripada Yellampalli project to provide drinking water, facilitate irrigation and meet industrial needs across 23 districts of Telangana. A dream project of the Telangana CM, the project was executed on a fast track mode and involved building a 1.6 km long barrage across the river Godavari equipped with 85 gates, piers and associated guide bunds, and flood bunds of 18.03 km on either side of the barrage.

The completion of this project by L&T, a first-of-its-kind in the Indian construction industry, set several records in terms of sheer use of construction material like concrete and steel in record time in a challenging operating environment.

The magnitude of the project can be gauged from the following statistics: 1.8 crore cubic meters of earthwork excavation, 18.5 lakh cubic meters of concreting work (equivalent to 7 times that of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa), 1.35 lakh metric ton of steel work (equivalent to more than 15 times used in building the Eiffel Tower), 5.5 lakh square meters of formwork and over 25,0000 metric ton of hydro-mechanical works.

Considering the speed of execution, quite a few world records were set by the Heavy Civil Infrastructure Business that executed the project. These include 16,722 cubic meters of concrete poured in a day, 25,584 cubic meters in 72 hours and 1,94,081 cubic meters in a month – all remarkable achievements without any parallels in the Indian construction industry.
