Bullet Points
Bullet Points
WITH L&T achieving one after another milestones in quick succession, India’s first bullet train corridor project – the prestigious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) – is fast speeding towards completion. The project is primed to set the gold standard for endeavours of this kind in the future.

CASTING SPAN GIRDER

On October 28, L&T’s Transportation Infrastructure vertical casted India’s first full span girder for MAHSR’s C6 Package (Vadodara to Ahmedabad) at its casting yard near Gamdi off Ahmedabad. The full span box girder was 6 m x 2.45 m and a top width of 11.9 m requiring a total concreting of 380 cum, using stationary pumps and boom placers.

Mr Satish Agnihotri, MD – National High Speed Rail Corporation Ltd (NHSRCL), initiated the first concrete pour in the presence of Mr Pramod Sharma, ED – NHSRCL, and Mr Pradeep Ahirkar, CPM – NHSRCL.

Mr Shrinath Rao (EVP & Head, Roads, Runways & Elevated Corridors – L&T), Mr Mohan Ramesh (Head – TFL MAHSR C6), Mr Kaustuv Ghosh (Head– Technology Services, RREC – L&T), Mr S P Rajan (Head – Plant & Machinery, RREC – L&T) and Mr Akilesh Kumar Singh (PD of Section – II) explained the casting process to NHSRCL officials.

Thanks to meticulous planning and skilled workmanship, the full span girder was casted in 10 hours. A sophisticated steel shuttering system along with automated hydraulics of the full span of 40m - completely built in India was deployed to cast the full span girder.

Fully automated internal shutters with hydraulics were deployed for moulding and demoulding. Three separate hydraulic jack systems were designed for deshuttering. The 40m internal shutters are assembled outside the casting bed and pushed using electrical drive assembly.

VIADUCT BOX

Then it was the turn of a viaduct. Package C4 commenced casting of 40 m, 970 MT full-span box girders at Navsari, near Surat, to construct the viaduct for the elevated corridor. These girders are among the heaviest pre-stressed concrete spans in India.

The concrete pouring was flagged off by Union Minister of State for Railways and Textiles, Ms Darshana Jardosh, in the presence of NHSRCL MD Mr Satish Agnihotri, Director Projects Mr Rajendra Prasad and L&T’s Whole Time Director and Sr EVP – Civil Infrastructure Mr S V Desai.

The full span girder was cast through extensive planning and adherence to strict time limits and protocols requiring total concreting of 388 m3 using mobile boom placers and a custom-made formwork system with automated hydraulics.

“This is a special occasion for the C4 Package that we have achieved it in a very stringent time schedule of 11 months from notice to proceed in the face of various constraints like COVID, an extended monsoon and global shipping difficulties. With the support of the Government and NHSRCL we have succeeded and look forward to similar support to complete the project on time with utmost quality and safety,” an elated Mr Desai said on the occasion.

NHSRCL MD Mr Satish Agnihotri complimented L&T’s efforts while minister Ms Jardosh said that it was for the first time that such a large girder was being cast in the country.

SPAN ERECTION

Taking the constructing to the next stage, L&T’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure team successfully erected the first full-span 40 m, 970 MT box girder at the C4 Package casting yard at Navsari, near Surat.

The prestressed box girder was erected using the full span launching method, with a straddle carrier moving the girder to the erection spot and a bridge gantry lifting and placing the girder on the piers. The erection marks an important milestone towards completing the Surat-Billimora stretch of MAHSR project.

Present on the occasion were Mr Agnihotri, Mr Saito Mitsunori (Chief Representative – JICA India Office), Mr Miyamoto Shingo (Minister – Economic & Development, Embassy of Japan in India), NHSRCL’s Director of Projects Mr Prasad, Mr Desai, Mr G Vinod (TFL, MAHSR-C4), Mr N Kaul (Head – Technical Services, MAHSR-C4) and Mr Zamshed Ali (PD – MAHSR-C4, Section-2).

“The biggest challenge to execute this mammoth project is to successfully and consistently build to speed and scale,” Mr Desai said, adding, “the full-span launching equipment that we have adopted will certainly help us fast track the construction.”

NHSRCL MD Mr Agnihotri complimented L&T’s team efforts in achieving this milestone 48 days before the scheduled date.

Combating COVID
Combating COVID
AS part of Maharashtra’s Pimpri-Chinchwad Smart City Project, L&T supplied smart kiosks at all the eight zones as well as hospitals falling within the ambit of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). These kiosks are proving to be of tremendous help to the public for e-governance applications.

As the COVID-19 pandemic swooped in and vaccines were developed, the Central and state governments decided to provide free vaccination to all citizens. PCMC, therefore, established vaccination centres all across the city.

At the suggestion of the L&T team, the e-kiosks were made available for those who lack smart phones to register for vaccination. With the help of the PCMC’s IT team, COVID-19 app/software were developed for the kiosks. Now, the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad can book their vaccination appointment in a simple manner and obtain a printed token with the date, time, venue and type of vaccine.

This token system has reduced the direct walk-in rush at the vaccination centers and thereby minimised the chances of COVID spread. This solution is widely appreciated by the citizens, local politicians and the PCMC as it has minimised the confusion regarding registration for vaccination.

CARING COIMBATORE

When India began the world’s largest COVID-19 vaccination drive in January 2021, the Central government urged all frontline workers followed by citizens above 45 years to get inoculated. Many L&T campuses around the country organised vaccination drives for staffers, their families, and even the general public, in some cases.

For   instance,   L&T’s   Coimbatore Campus started focusing on vaccinating all its employees as soon as the vaccines were rolled out, despite the hesitancy of the general public to venture out for the shot. Through its deep association with the district health administration, it began driving COVID vaccination for L&T’s employees and their families. Around 200 employees were inoculated in the local Primary Health Centre till April 2021.

Subsequently, on campus vaccination drives were conducted in May and August, resulting in the double vaccination of 94% campus staffers.

The second wave spurred even more people to queue up for inoculation. Free vaccination service was started in September 2021 at the L&T Community Health Centre – an ‘Aarogya’ healthcare initiative of L&T Public Charitable Trust. Around 7000 doses have been administrated up to 15 December.

The vaccinated include the general public, L&T employees and their families, L&T’s vendors, and staffers from the neighboring industrial companies. The Health Centre has also conducted five ‘Mega Vaccination Camps’ in four tribal village– Chinnampathi, Puduppathi, Mruganpathi and Ayyampathi in Coimbatore through its mobile medical unit.
