Global certification gives L&T a competitive edge in nuclear supplies
The ISO 19443:2018 – a nuclear-sector-specific certification – that L&T Heavy Engineering (HE) earned in February has started yielding results for  the business.

Armed with the certification, HE has qualified as the first Indian supplier to Electricite de France SA (EDF), a multinational electric utility company, which is to implement the world’s largest nuclear power station – the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) in Maharashtra. The qualification certificate for the project was awarded to HE at EDF’s 8th Suppliers’ Day event in Mumbai on 23 February.
This came within a week after the globally recognised Norway-based agency, DNV, presented the ISO 19443:2018 certification to HE, making it India’s first entity to earn the coveted certification. This nuclear sector- specific quality management system (QMS) is designed to improve the quality and safety standards across the nuclear supply chain.
Besides regulatory body requirements, ISO 19443:2018 is the only standard that asks for implementing and demonstrating a nuclear safety culture. It demands a system for apt management of counterfeit, fraudulent, and suspected items, classifying items and services as ‘important’ and ‘not important’ to nuclear safety, and so on.
“ISO 19443 specifies the QMS wherein an organisation must consistently demonstrate the ability to provide products and services important to nuclear safety and aims to enhance customer satisfaction through systemic improvements and quality assurance. Implementing this QMS is a prerequisite for export of nuclear products,” says Mr Anil Parab (Whole-time Director & Sr EVP – Heavy Engineering & L&T Valves).
Many European nuclear power plant operators have made ISO 19443:2018 certification mandatory for suppliers of nuclear components. For decades, L&T has been involved in manufacturing nuclear reactors for clients in India and abroad. The certification has provided the Company with a competitive edge.

Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), set up by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to promote India as one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment, has awarded a Gold rating to Hyderabad Next - Business Park Tower 1 at Raidurg. The business tower, built by L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad Ltd (L&TMRHL), is part of transit-oriented development initiatives.
The recently commissioned business tower has been constructed using sustainable architecture and design that enables water conservation and energy efficiency. Its salient green features include – high solar reflective index paint on terrace (cool roof), EV charging points, low- flow plumbing fixtures, energy efficient AHUs, chillers, fans & pumps, heat recovery wheel, superior U value façade and surrounding green space.
Impressed by these sustainable features, IGBC accorded Gold rating to the tower under Green New Buildings category. On 8 March, Mr C Shekar Reddy (Chairman - IGBC Hyderabad Chapter) presented the plaque and certificate to L&TMRHL CEO & MD Mr KVB Reddy, in the presence of several other dignitaries.
It is worth mentioning that as many as 23 metro stations of Hyderabad Metro enjoy the IGBC Platinum rating.

Hyderabad Metro earned kudos from the All India Industrial Exhibition organisers – Numaish 2023 – for enabling visitors to commute to the venue by running the extra mile during the 46-day exhibition.
Started in 1938, Numaish is one of the world’s oldest consumer shows and is hosted at Hyderabad’s Nampally every winter. The venue is well connected by Hyderabad Metro from both Nampally and Gandhi Bhavan stations.
To benefit Numaish visitors, Hyderabad Metro ran trains beyond the usual business hours, along two routes – Miyapur-LB Nagar and Raidurg-Nagole. All through the exhibition days – 1 January-15 February – the last trains on these routes departed at midnight and reached the destinations at 1 am.
The metro authorities also deployed additional workforce and operated special ticket counters at Gandhi Bhavan to facilitate a seamless ride for the Numaish visitors. The extended Metro timings throughout the event resulted in higher footfalls, prompting the Numaish organisers to felicitate Hyderabad Metro.
On behalf of the organisers, Telangana’s Home Minister Mr Mahmood Ali presented a special memento and citation to Mr Jaipal Reddy (DGM - Stations, Keolis Hyderabad) on 13 February in the presence of Hyderabad Police Commissioner Mr CV Anand.
