L&T Whole-time Director Mr Anil Parab, first from right, and his team receive the EDF qualification certificate.
Global certification gives L&T a competitive edge in nuclear supplies The ISO 19443:2018 – a nuclear-sector-specific certification – that L&T Heavy Engineering (HE) earned in February has started yielding results for the business. Armed with the certification, HE has qualified as the first Indian supplier to Electricite de France SA (EDF), a multinational electric utility company, which is to implement the world’s largest nuclear power station – the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project (JNPP) in Maharashtra. The qualification certificate for the project was awarded to HE at EDF’s 8th Suppliers’ Day event in Mumbai on 23 February. This came within a week after the globally recognised Norway-based agency, DNV, presented the ISO 19443:2018 certification to HE, making it India’s first entity to earn the coveted certification. This nuclear sector- specific quality management system (QMS) is designed to improve the quality and safety standards across the nuclear supply chain.
Besides regulatory body requirements, ISO 19443:2018 is the only standard that asks for implementing and demonstrating a nuclear safety culture. It demands a system for apt management of counterfeit, fraudulent, and suspected items, classifying items and services as ‘important’ and ‘not important’ to nuclear safety, and so on. “ISO 19443 specifies the QMS wherein an organisation must consistently demonstrate the ability to provide products and services important to nuclear safety and aims to enhance customer satisfaction through systemic improvements and quality assurance. Implementing this QMS is a prerequisite for export of nuclear products,” says Mr Anil Parab (Whole-time Director & Sr EVP – Heavy Engineering & L&T Valves). Many European nuclear power plant operators have made ISO 19443:2018 certification mandatory for suppliers of nuclear components. For decades, L&T has been involved in manufacturing nuclear reactors for clients in India and abroad. The certification has provided the Company with a competitive edge.
