IIT Bombay Bestows Distinguished Alumnus Award on JD Patil
Mr. Jayant Damodar Patil, Whole-time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President (Defence Business), L&T, was honored by IIT Bombay, his alma mater with the prestigious Distinguished Alumnus Award on March 10, 2018, on the Institute’s 59th Foundation Day. Mr. Patil was felicitated by Dr. Anil Kakodkar, Ex-Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Bombay and the Guest of Honour for the function with several high-profile guests and eminent personalities from the industry and the academia in the audience.

Mr. Patil graduated from IIT Bombay with an M. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering in 1978 topping the ranks. Joining L&T immediately thereafter, he forged for himself a remarkable career in which he played a vital role in many of the Company’s ambitious missions, and growth charters. 

Over the years, Mr. Patil led L&T’s foray in Defence, and under his leadership the team developed a basket of technologies and new products in Defence Systems for L&T. He made pioneering contributions in the domains of system architecture, configuration design and interdisciplinary product development for across the range Weapon & Engineering systems for DRDO Programs. He spearheaded the Industrial Product & Technology Development Centre that involved building & nurturing an in-house technical and scientific manpower pool, overseeing Prototype Development Centre at Mumbai and at Bengaluru also proved crucial to L&T’s positioning in the sector. 

Mr. Patil’s deep involvement in Defence Systems has meant that his expertise and views are sought frequently by MoD, DRDO and by Industry Bodies including FICCI and CII. A winner of several prestigious honours including the Honorary Fellowship by Project Management Associates (The National Association of Project Managers) and Fellowship by INAE (Indian National Academy of Engineering), Mr. Patil believes that his two years at IIT Bombay laid a strong foundation for innovation, and set him on the path for the success stories he scripted throughout his career.

Besides IIT Bombay, Mr. Patil’s association with Powai is made stronger through the Gurukul at Sandeepany Sadhanalaya, Chinmaya Mission at Powai. His study of Vedas and spirituality there, and his taking courses have given him an evolved perspective on life, and provided him with the inner strength to take on whatever challenges life throws at him.

Two L&T Hazira Workmen Win PM’s Shram Award
L&T’s strength and the secret to its success rests squarely upon the diligence of its workers. Home to some of industry’s best skilled men and women, it’s the Company’s workforce that separates it from its peers. Two such men from L&T Heavy Engineering at Hazira, Gujarat, were recently feted by the Government of India (GoI) at a special function held in New Delhi.

For their distinguished performance, innovative ability, and contribution in the field of productivity Mr. Ghanshyam G. Salat (Heavy Fabrication Shop-4A) and Mr. Arvind C Patel (Heavy Fabrication Shop-2A) were bestowed Prime Minister’s Shram Vir and Shram Shree Award respectively. The duo was felicitated by Hon’ble Vice President of India Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu along with other equally distinguished workers employed in Public Sector Undertakings, Departmental Undertakings of the Central and the State Governments and Private Sector Units.

Mr. Salat’s Shram Vir Award carried a cash prize of Rs. 60,000 and a citation. He won the award for his contribution in cycle time reduction and cost saving for E.O. Reactor’s Preheater and Insert Assembly Work. He also implemented Automatic Overlay Process for Nozzle.

L&T’s other honouree, Mr. Patel won the award for his contribution in cycle time reduction by consuming accuracy of 3D WEP Profile while cutting through synchronization motion of positioner & rotary table, leading to First Time Right achievement. His Shram Shree Award carried a cash prize of Rs. 40,000 and a citation.

The PM’s Shram Awards are given in four categories viz. ‘Shram Ratna’, ‘Shram Bhushan’, ‘Shram Vir/Shram Virangana’ and ‘Shram Shree/Shram Devi’ to workers of varying profile from central and state government companies and functions and private sector companies employing 500 or more workers.

Featuring a stringent eligibility criteria and assessment methodology, PM’s Shram Awards are a highly coveted prize for workers everywhere. Over the years L&T Heavy Engineering, Hazira, has proven its might by winning the award 21 times across its various categories.

E&A Wins at MQH Best Practices Competition
L&T’s Electrical & Automation business bagged the coveted Winner’s Trophy at the (Making Quality Happen) MQH Best Practices Competition organised by the IMC Ramkrishna Bajaj National Quality Award (RNBQA) Trust.  The competition held at Mumbai from March 8-9, 2018, was common to IMC RBNQA winners and organisations adopting competitive Business/Performance Excellence Models, this year onwards. Previously, beginning with the IMC RBNQA 2014 cycle, the MQH Best Practices Competition was seeded as an additional feature and thereafter integrated into the well-established MQH Annual Conference.

E&A’s submission of ‘ELITE – E&A’s Lean Initiative Towards Excellence’ which promotes continuous improvements across all operations by addressing the business challenges of Quality-Cost-Delivery was unanimously declared the winner by a four-member jury composed of Senior Examiners of the IMC RBNQA. In the category, E&A competed against five other contestants from the manufacturing segment. Entrants taking part in the competition could submit up to two Best Practices in a prescribed format prior to the two-day competition. The entries were first evaluated by a panel of IMC RBNQA Examiners and then shortlisted by the IMC Quality Cell.
 
The E&A team received the trophy from the jury members - Dr Alka Mitra, Head GMS (L&D), Planning & Operations, Reliance Industries Ltd; Mr Rajagopal Mukundan, Consultant, Quality Solutions Consultant; Mr Mohan Sane, Vice President (Quality), Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Mr Jitendra Sanghvi, CEO, Jain International Organization.

Team L&T Takes the Crown at MatQuiz National Finals
Team L&T Takes the Crown at MatQuiz National Finals
A team comprising Mr. Sudam Sahu from C&A - Procurement and Mr. Sameer Momaya from L&T Construction - B&F-RBF, was crowned as the winner of the 15th edition of MatQuiz, the annual contest organized by the Indian Institute of Materials Management (IIMM) for Supply Chain & Materials Management Professionals. Held on March 8, 2018, in Mumbai, the event saw Team L&T tower over its nearest rival, a combined team of BHEL & TATA Bluescope with 77 points.

L&T had not one but two team among the six that had managed to reach the national finals. In the semis they competed against 19 other teams drawn from corporates like Mahindra & Mahindra, Reliance Industries, Hindustan Coca Cola, NPCIL, BHEL, UPL, Raymond, ACC, Lupin and IIMM. The semi-finals included multiple rounds of Direct Questions, Visual Rounds, Connect the Dots, Crossword, Buying Strategies, Rapid Fire Round, and covered topics on General Management, SCM Strategy, Logistics, Imports, GST, Inventory Control, Warehousing etc.

In the individual preliminary online rounds held earlier, C&A’s entire Procurement team had participated the contest. After qualifying at the quarter finals at L&T level, Mr. Sahu then qualified for semifinals at the national level along with Mr. Momaya.
