L&T-Komatsu partnership crosses a memorable milestone

L&T’s association with the construction and mining major Komatsu touched a new high with the sale of 50,000th Komatsu machine in India in July. The milestone is a testament to Komatsu’s technological prowess and L&T’s dealer network.

    Partners in Progress

In 1998, L&T and Komatsu initiated a ground-breaking collaboration to manufacture construction equipment in India. The alliance underscored commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable, productive and fuel-efficient global models.

The partnership took off with the introduction of Komatsu’s tracked excavator model PC 200-6, the first of many machines designed to meet India’s evolving infrastructure needs. The range of Komatsu’s construction and mining equipment marketed and serviced by L&T now includes excavators, wheel-loaders, graders, dozers and dump trucks.

    Abundance Abounds

With over 80 years of pioneering contributions to India’s construction equipment industry, strategically located state-of-the-art service stations, training and skilling initiatives, L&T laid a solid foundation for the alliance.

The synergy between Komatsu’s innovative machinery and L&T’s dedicated customer- focused services has been addressing India’s growing infrastructure needs. L&T’s pan-India dealerships – many of which are over 20 years old – deliver exceptional value to customers.

Customers who opt for L&T and Komatsu’s cutting-edge technology and seamless solutions benefit from significant productivity improvements – such as those arising from state-of-the-art automation, GPS and telematics. These technologies enable precise equipment control and monitoring, leading to optimised operation and increased uptime.

    Memorable Milestone

At the event organised in Chennai to celebrate the sale of 50,000th Komatsu machine in India, Yasunori Fujii (MD – Komatsu India) congratulated the teams and emphasised how L&T’s dedication ensures that each machine meets the highest standards and exceeds customer expectations.

Arvind K Garg (Sr VP & Head – L&T Construction & Mining Machinery) expressed gratitude for the construction industry’s patronage. Reflecting on his vertical’s journey, he recalled the humble beginnings, the production of the first machine and its numerous achievements since then.

L&T achieves yet another milestone, this time at the Dahej LNG storage tank project

L&T Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH) has once again demonstrated its engineering excellence and commitment to timely project execution with a major achievement in the Dahej LNG storage tank project in Gujarat. This it has accomplished for Petronet LNG Ltd.

The project – which involves engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of two full containment LNG storage tanks, each with a capacity of 170,000 m³, and associated pipe racks – has reached mechanical completion three months ahead of schedule! This is a testament to L&T’s exceptional execution capabilities and technological prowess.

One of the outstanding achievements of the project has been the execution of critical activities, such as the air-raising of an 850 MT steel roof and the hydro- pneumatic testing of the tanks. These complex tasks were accomplished with precision, with in-house engineering expertise and meticulous planning.

Despite challenges (such as a disrupted supply chain due to geopolitical factors), LTEH’s robust sourcing and expediting strategies ensured that crucial cryogenic tank components were delivered on time, further underscoring its resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.

The project’s success is not limited to its technical achievements. LTEH also demonstrated an unwavering commitment to Health, Safety and Environment (HSE standards throughout the project.

Accumulating an impressive seven million man-hours with zero lost-time injuries, the project has been a model of safety excellence. The dedication to safety has been affirmed by several prestigious awards, including the coveted CII-SR EHS Award.

As the project progresses, the focus will now shift to the commissioning of the LNG storage tanks and their seamless integration with the existing facility. LTEH is ensuring that the transition to operational status is smooth, with a successful project handover as the final goal.
