L&T puts Qatar’s largest oil field expansion project on the path to completion

The Ruya Development Project (Package 12) in Qatar, being implemented by L&T Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH), got rolling with the first steel cutting ceremony hosted in November 2024. The engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) package pertains to the expansion of Qatar’s largest oil field Al-Shaheen. Ruya means 'vision' in Arabic.

Operated by Qatar’s North Oil Company (NOC), Al-Shaheen is a conventional offshore oil reservoir, approximately 70 km north-northeast of Ras Laffan. It overlays the Pre-Khuff North Field, which is the world’s largest non-associated gas field (a gas field that does not produce crude oil).

The steel cutting ceremony, hosted at LTEH’s Modular Fabrication Yard at Sohar in Oman, signifies the commencement of fabrication for Package 12.

The event was graced by NOC’s Frédéric Paux (CEO), Vinod Singh (VP, Major Projects), Shanthakumar Rajenthran (Ruya Project Manager) and Loic Delebecque (Technical & JV Manager, Al-Shaheen – TotalEnergies). From L&T, were present Subramanian Sarma (Whole-time Director & President (Energy) – L&T), E S Sathyanarayanan (COO – Middle East, LTEH), and Parthasarathi Chatterjee (EVP & Head – Offshore, LTEH).

Addressing the gathering, Mr Sarma emphasised L&T’s pivotal role in advancing Qatar’s energy infrastructure.

Al-Shaheen is undergoing an extensive development to enhance its production capacity. L&T’s scope includes setting up a Riser Platform to be linked to the Bridge & Electrical (BE) Platform, integration of risers and J-tubes, and brownfield jobs at the existing BE Platform and Electrical Distribution points, involving tie-ins and network integration.

The package has already made significant progress such as completion of 60% model review, hazard identification, hazard & operability study, safety integrity level, and constructability workshops. Up to the first steel cutting, the project recorded 6.6 million safe manhours.

As the steel sparks flew at the Sohar Yard, the steel cutting ceremony not only marked the commencement of fabrication but also demonstrated L&T’s resolve to build a sustainable-energy future.

An MoU sets the stage for LTSCT’s foray into the Japanese market.

The Far East will not remain far for L&T Semiconductor Technologies Ltd (LTSCT) anymore! Very soon it will be developing semiconductor products tailored for the Japanese market.

LTSCT took the first step in that direction by inking a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Tokyo-based Marubun Corporation. Finalised in December 2024, the collaboration aims to leverage Marubun’s market expertise in Japan and LTSCT’s strengths in India.

The MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for market research in Japan to support LTSCT’s drive to develop products for the Japanese market. In return, Marubun will leverage LTSCT’s comprehensive capabilities to build an ecosystem for expansion into the Indian market or for reviewing their global supply chains.

The partnership assumes significance as the global semiconductor industry witnesses a geographic shift, with Asia emerging as a major player. The growing demand for specialised chips and the rapid pace of technological advancements will further intensify competition.

LTSCT focusses on delivering innovative semiconductor technologies and solutions to customers worldwide, and this collaboration is likely to help build the semiconductor ecosystem by combining LTSCT’s innovative capabilities with Marubun’s market expertise in Japan.

Komatsu and L&T reaffirm commitment to innovation and sustainability at major industry exhibition

L&T and Komatsu showcased technological prowess at bauma ConEXPO 2024, one of India’s largest exhibitions of construction machinery, hosted this time at Greater Noida from 11-14 December 2024.

The L&T stall was inaugurated by Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, Nitin Gadkari, who also unveiled Komatsu’s latest offering – PC35MR-3 mini hydraulic excavator.

The first PC35MR-3 was handed over to L&T customers S Venkatesan and M Devaraju of Amman Earth Movers. Tailored for urban sites where space is a constraint, the excavator is ideal for trenching, land development, and demolition.

With its high lifting capacity, reach, and fuel-efficiency, PC35MR-3 offers unmatched reliability and durability. Users also stand to benefit from lower environmental footprint due to a reduction in noise, vibration and emissions.

Apart from several other hydraulic excavator models, the L&T stall also displayed Komatsu attachments and Komatsu Recon Engine. A dedicated counter showcased Komatsu’s latest Smart Construction Solutions, which harness technology to provide accurate data, comprehensive reporting and remote capabilities.

The Komatsu Oil Wear Analysis counter demonstrated how preventive-maintenance technology can enhance machine performance and longevity. The stall also showcased Machine Care Programme-5, which offers a five-year or 12,500-hour extended powertrain warranty (whichever is earlier) on a select range of machines.

In tune with the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, also on display were L&T’s indigenously manufactured machines and attachments – such as wheel-loader, soil compactor, tandem and mini tandem compactors, pneumatic-tyred roller, slope compactors and rock-splitters. The eC1300 Crusher Cone, which underlined L&T’s focus on sustainable and indigenous solutions, was the prime attraction.

An area was earmarked to enlighten visitors on the stark differences between genuine and lookalike spares and the advantages of using the former. Adding a touch of delight to the hard-core machinery exhibition was a stall offering visitors miniature models, keychains and collectibles.

bauma ConEXPO gave Komatsu and L&T an opportunity to demonstrate their leadership in the industry through a wide array of machines and solutions that reaffirm commitment to innovation, sustainability, safety and solutions tailored to Indian conditions.
